Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Abba T. Makama has revealed an ambitious new project that represents a major departure from his past surrealist narrative films. With the title “ODYSSEY,” the soon-to-be-released documentary seeks to explore the hundred-year history of Yoruba music, charting its beginnings and growth to its present international recognition.
Makama, famous for well-received films like “Green White Green,” “The Lost Okoroshi,” and “Juju Stories,” is poised to introduce his unique storytelling style to this extensive exploration of Yoruba music.
The documentary will include enlightening conversations with important members of the industry, providing a thorough story that delves into the impact of religion, colonialism, and social interactions on forming the genre.
“ODYSSEY” will explore various Yoruba musical genres like Sakara, Apala, Ajiwere, Fuji, Juju, and Highlife, showcasing the evolution of the genre in the last century.
White House Pictures supports the project, led by executive producer Bobo Omotayo, with producers Papa Omotayo, Tosin Ashafa, and Ife Koleowo.
“ODYSSEY” is planned to be released in 2025.
